From a refrigerator-parts maker in Zhejiang to one of the world’s largest automotive groups — and now in Makassar.
1997
Entering the auto industry
Geely took its first step into the automotive industry, eleven years after the company was founded.
1998
The first car
On 8 August 1998 the Geely Haoqing — Geely’s first car — rolled off the assembly line in Linhai, Zhejiang.
2001
National production licence
On 9 November 2001 Geely received its national production licence, opening the way to becoming a private carmaker in China.
2010
Acquiring Volvo Cars
Geely bought Volvo Cars from Ford for US$1.8 billion — the largest overseas purchase by a Chinese carmaker at the time.
2016
Lynk & Co is born
In October 2016 Geely Auto introduced the Lynk & Co brand in Berlin, Germany.
2017
Proton and Lotus
The Geely group acquired a 49.9% stake in Proton and a 51% controlling stake in Lotus Cars.
2021
Zeekr
In March 2021 the Geely group launched Zeekr, a premium electric-vehicle brand.
2023
Geely Galaxy
The Geely Galaxy new-energy line-up was established in February 2023.
2024
The GEA architecture
On 28 April 2024 at Auto China in Beijing, Geely unveiled GEA — the architecture underpinning the EX5 and EX2.
2025
Arriving in Indonesia
In January 2025 Geely Auto Indonesia officially launched with the Geely EX5. The same year, Geely’s global sales passed 4.1 million units.
